Flyy Fridays: Beverly Johnson

Since it’s Women’s History Month, this month’s Flyy Fridays will feature black models who have made their mark in fashion history. Today, it’s all about Beverly Johnson.

Born in October 1952, Beverly Johnson is the first black model to grace the covers of American “Vogue” and French “Elle” magazines. Johnson also helped alter the beauty standard in fashion and by 1975, every major U.S. fashion designer began working with black models.

Johnson has acheived much in her career, including:

  • Being featured on more than 500 magazine covers
  • Appearing on the covers of “Glamour,” “Cosmopolitan” and “Essence” magazines
  • Becoming one of the highest-paid models in the industry in the 1970s
  • Publishing two books: “True Beauty: Secrets of Radiant Beauty for Women of Every Age and Color” and “Beverly Johnson’s Guide to Life with Health and Beauty”
  • An acting career
  • Producing a collection of hair wigs and extensions (Beverly Johnson Hair Collection)
  • Being named on of the 20th Century’s 100 Most Influential People in the Fashion Industry by the New York Times
  • Being featured on the cover of Glamour’s 5oth anniversary issue

Recently, she has served as a celebrity judge on the TV Land reality show, She’s Got the Look.
