We Sorry: U.S. Senate apologizes for slavery

18 06 2009

[from essence.com] Today the Senate passed a nonbinding resolution that apologized to Blacks for the “transgression of slavery.” It was sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin D-Iowa and was approved on a voice vote.

This resolution is similar to one from last year that acknowledged slavery’s wrong doing but didn’t offer any reparations. It was also the first time a part of the federal government did this. The House, however, is going to have to revisit the resolution because the structure of the chamber changed after the elections last November.

“Harkin’s resolution, ‘acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery, and Jim Crow Laws.'”
