It’s St. Patty’s Day!

st-patricks2I was trying to figure out what I could write about for St. Patrick’s, so I decided to give some interesting facts about Ireland.

  • The place with the longest name in Ireland Muckanaghederdauhaulia.

A strange Irish birthday tradition is to put the birthday child upside down and give his/her head a few gentle bumps on the floor for good luck. Supposedly, the number of bumps should correspond to the child’s age plus one.

  • One traditional Irish method of getting rid of a hangover was to be buried up to the neck in moist river sand.
  • Couples in Ireland could marry legallyon Feb.1 [St. Brigid’s Day] as recently as 1920. What’s interesting about that? All they had to do was walk towards each other. And to get a divorce, they just had to talk away from each other at the same spot they were married.
  • An old legend says that while Jesus will judge everyone on Judgment Day, St. Patrick will judge the Irish.
